The Master of the Adze (Ebook)

He could see the true line in a piece of oak. He could not see what he was building.

Genoa, 1096. Pietro da Cogorno is a poor boy with a rare gift: an eye that reads a true line in the grain of oak at a glance. Under a hard, haunted master he becomes the master of the adze and learns the one creed that governs the craft, that there is no lie in the wood.

Then the cross is preached, and a road opens that promises to wash even the low and the shamed white. Pietro takes it, and crosses the sea to the holy war with the fervor for his only bride, worshipping the captain the men call the Maul Head, burning for Jerusalem.

At the stalled walls of the holy city it is his craft that will make the difference, a great tower raised from the timber of the ships they sailed. Pietro builds the thing that will open the way in.

What comes through the door he has made will unmake him.
