The Merchant's Will (Ebook)

Genoa, 1463. At his bench in the Banchi, Pellegro Vivaldi opens a new leaf in his ledger and carries the old debts forward. His son Vadino keeps a third of a storeroom at Caffa, where the new consul is a Doria. Raffaele holds 63 cruzados at Lisbon and owes nobody. Bianchina, widowed, keeps the keys and a book of her own. In the iron chest the house's account with the Doria, open since the galleys of 1291, grows every month with no line drawn under it. Opizzo Doria praises the family's wine and speaks of everything but that. On Holy Saturday of 1464 a notary warns Pellegro that a house in order goes to pieces fastest when its head is gone without a paper. Pellegro tells him to come after Easter.

The Merchant's Will continues The Remaking of the House, a family saga that follows the Vivaldi across the centuries as the center of the Western world moves from the Levant and the Mediterranean to the Atlantic.
